Bunnies tend to sleep with their eyes open - so what may seem like bunny relaxing in the corner in a meatloafed position is actually a bunny sleeping. If you approach them and suddenly get a dirty look or, even worse, a THUMP of disgust, it's because hooman, you had the nerve to wake them up.
Sage rarely slept beside me, Scout would sleep under my chin. (A blessing that became a wee bit more tedious as her bladder control went..) It's probably one of those "OMFG, you humans MOVE too much!" things with most bunnies.
Sleeping with eyes open--yes. I've often disturbed my buns during a nap, thinking they were awake, and found them to be lethargic and slow moving. At first I would think they were ailing, but then got the info about sleeping and eyelids.
I was going to say exactly what Lorna said. If he's still for awhile, chances are he's sleeping. I find a better way of deciding whether my rabbits are sleeping is to watch their mouths. Biff especially does this silent snoring thing where his lips kind of flutter and twitch, and their noses will have varying degrees of twitchyness when they're dreaming.

He looks quite comfy whether he's asleep or not. A relaxed bunny is a happy bunny!
