Bumps

Clovis has little bumps along his spine, from the middle of his back to his tail.  They're like little scabs of dandruff. In December he started moulting and I thought somehow that was related.  (At first I thought it was mange...)

I had Dr. Heather take a look.  She took some scrapings to look at under her microscope checking for parasites but didn't see any. She gave me some gauze soaked in Chlorhexiderm cleansing solution to clean the area.  But that doesn't seem to be helping.

When I touch or scratch these bumps Clovis licks the carpet like crazy. He sort of pulls away when I touch the area. It's like it tickles or hurts, I'm not sure which. I've tried unsuccessfully to comb these bumps out.  When I pull fur out some of it has dandruff attached to it.

Has anybody out there seen something like this on your little buns?

Sure sounds like mites, maybe another look by the vet?

Ouch! I hope Clovie feels better and you discover the cause.

Did a look through my sources; if it's not mites, it could be ringworm, which is a fungal infection. It's also possible that his skin has gotten very dry and him scratching at it has caused some sores; bunny skin can be pretty sensitive.

Whatever it is, I hope it can be fixed quickly so Clovis can get some relief. Mick and I will be thinking lots of good thoughts for him.

Oh my..poor baby. Not sure, but mites came to mind first. Maybe just really bad dry skin like Jade said.
Sending healing thoughts your way.

I think, if memory serves the time my rabbit had something similar the scrapings actually didn't show anything, but we did the treatment (I think it was a weekly vacination for a couple weeks) and it went away.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am leaning toward treatment for mites.

Yeah, my thoughts would be to get some Revolution and treat for mites. Revolution treats other parasites too, like fleas. It's more or less harmless, so treating in a situation like this really can't hurt.

I agree with Diana...it is mites. Neville had a case when he was so stressed in December due to Miss Eve. He got weekly injections of Panomec, and after 3 weeks it was all gone. Be careful not to use a spot-on treatment, especially if Clovie is with another rabbit, as it is not suitable for being ingested.
