I don't know if you would call it a grunt or a growl but I never knew rabbits would do that. (Or a scream for that matter. What a horrible sound.) The first time I heard Clovie growl it really scared me and he usually accompanies his growls with a lunge as if he were going to attack. Or he may scratch at me with his front paws. I learned early on that you don't want to go near the crock when he's eating his pellets. That's serious. And he doesn't like it when I reach for him head on. Better to approach from the side.
Another thing that he really doesn't like is when you "walk" your fingers toward him. Must be pretty scary. My daughter's finger ended up in the gap between his front teeth and the molars when she did that. No harm done but lesson learned.

When Tango used to growl it sounded more like a "honk"....a bunny scream is the most horrible sound in the world.
Racer and Chico can grunt and growl sith the best of them - usually when approached right from the front. I don't think they see too well right there ...
I've only had one bunny that would growl and bat at me with her paws. Whe was fine when I picked her up and looked like an angel. Back on the floor, she acted like a devil! hee, hee, hee.
Since their eyes are positioned on the side of their head, RG is right, they don't see too well when approached straight on. :)
Clovie is a commanding Bun and knows what he likes and doesn't like. We hoomins have to be trained somehow!
My Jamal is the noisiest bunny ever, but he squeeks and makes the cutest noises when I pick him up. He's silent on the ground. My Ding will growl and bat at me until I pick her up, then she is the best snuggler! She kind of squeals sometimes too, but it's not a scared or hurt squeal. It's kind of cute. She'll squeal when she's running and stops suddenly. The other buns have never made a noise. I have never heard a rabbit scream except at Cabela's when they set off the coyote call ... I never ever want to. I can't imagine it. I heard my doggie cry the other day when she hurt herself jumping in the truck and that broke my heart!
My three grump and growl especially when I remove their food bowls from their cages. I try telling them how silly they are. After all, they're being filled, not emptied. Silly Bunnies.
It's hard to visualize the adorable Clovie making rude sounds.
Even in his profile ... still see some pink bunny lips! A bunny's gotta do what a bunny's gotta do, and if Clovie's gotta growl a bit, then we hoomins just have to learn to appreciate it! :)
Biffy is a master of the grunt-and-box routine. "ER ER ER." I think the sound is so cute but it's even more comical because he thinks he's being a big tough guy. There are several triggers and we know many of them by now.
Clovis doesn't like people messing with him when he's eating, what's wrong with that?! I don't either, Clovie.
I don't ever want to hear a bunny scream. Ever.
